Find the template folder in the file dialog and right click on it.Now move up one level in the file dialog that appears.Note the name of the current folder at the top of the dialog box.We aren’t going to modify the location, but clicking this button will show a standard Windows file dialog. Select the User templates item from the File Types list.Open Word’s Options dialog by selecting Optionsfrom the Toolsmenu. It is much easier to do than explain, but here is the step-by-step process: One of the easiest ways to find the Templates folder is to open it from within Word using this simple trick. Use Word to open the folder (see below).Ĭhoose Explore from the context menu to open the Templates folder. If it isn’t visible in XP, choose Toolbars → Address Bar from the Viewmenu. The address bar is always visible in Vista. This works, even if the folders are hidden. Type the path into the Windows Explorer address bar, if it is visible.Select the Viewpage, and in the Advanced Settings list, select Show hidden files and folders. Tell Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders: choose Folder Options from the Toolsmenu. However, unless you’ve asked Windows to show hidden files and folders, the Application Data/ AppData folder may not be visible in Windows Explorer. In Windows Vista, it is usually: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\ In Windows XP, the folder location is usually: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\ The location of the templates folder depends on the operating system you are using and it can be changed in Word by the end-user (you!) or a system administrator, if you are on a network. To have your document templates appear in the dialog, you need to move (or copy) them into your Template folder using Windows Explorer. Adding Templates to the New Document Dialog For convenience, however, you can have your content templates appear in the New Document dialog and library templates (such as our Core Library template) can be loaded automatically. Double-clicking a Word document template in Windows Explorer will create a new document based on the styles in the template.
